Going Up? Not Likely.

I stumbled across this Toronto Star debate musing diatribe piece on how many balloons it would take to lift a house, inspired by the new Pixar film Up.

My favourite part? “This left several readers wondering: Just how many balloons would it take to lift a house?”

Really? Did you get a lot of emails from readers, wondering how they could lift their house with balloons? Did you have people doing experiments right away, hopelessly tying balloons to their window shutters? I guess a lot of stupid people read the Toronto Star. So, how many balloons would it take to lift a house?

They say it’s between 100 thousand – 23.5 million.

That's like saying it's somewhere in the ballpark of 'a few' to 'a ton'. So, long story short, they have no friggin' clue.

(Try getting that two minutes back.)

RANDOM BONUS: REMEMBER THAT PIZZA?

I'm ordering pizza the other night and the order confirmation screen comes up.

Place another order? We just ordered! Who the hell is this button for?

Guy 1 - “Hey, we just ordered the pizza. Now all we have to do is wait.”
Guy 2 - “I’m starving, let’s order another one.”
Guy 1 - “Okay!”

  1. It's about time a newspaper article was devoted to debating the reality of something seen in AN ANIMATED FILM.

Next on the debate list: How long would a Panda have to study martial arts before it becomes a Kung Fu expert?

  2. Rodger: My best guess is that the pizza button is for stoners - which makes your scenario all the more plausible.

Don't know about how many people have wondered about the balloons v. house dilemma (a full 2-3 douches?), but there was a lovely story about a gent, a lawn chair, some balloons - and the Darwin Awards.

@Graham Now that is a question I have been wondering about for some time.

  3. Here's the question, Monica... Hero? Or complete fucking lunatic? I like to think a little of both. :)
